Watched many of the votes, and every time the clerk called, "Jackson of North Carolina", I cheered. Honored to have you represent me in Congress.

Thanks, I appreciate that. Old friends from college were texting me saying they had no idea I had been elected to Congress until they saw me vote for Speaker.

A bit frightening to have the House run by a self serving hack controlled by a bunch of MAGA idiots. Here’s hoping you guys get some moderate Republicans to cross the isle and keep the country on an even keel.

Best wishes

Vermonter here! I totally agree with you about hoping “moderate Republicans cross the aisle”. I hope there are feverish negotiations going on behind the scenes.

I am no sure how I am getting these posts in my email. I am not a registered Democrat and while I am in NC I am not in your district. Over the last few years I have unsubscribed from every political message I used to receive. I have always considered myself a political nerd but have found the last 6 years mentally taxing. For the most part I don't even watch the news anymore but found myself fixated on this weeks vote.

After reading this post I have decided to not unsubscribe from your list. I found your post uplifting and not polarizing. Your last photo of your son saluting Lincoln actually brought a tear to my eye and reminded me of JFK Jr. saluting President Kennedy's casket. I hope you can bring some consensus to DC because a house divided can not stand.

I love that picture of his son, Owen, saluting Lincoln as well. Kids are so interesting. He felt the presence of that great man, who brought this country through worse than what we are going through now, and offered him respect for his service. He learned that respect from his parents, I'm pretty sure.

The past six years have been taxing, mentally and emotionally. As a single mom trying to get educated and pay the bills, I didn't pay much attention to politics. Kind of thought it was all just chugging along, relatively well. It's been a real education, learning how all of this works. I'm engaged now, and learning. But I'm getting more selective of what I will or won't spend my time reading as well. Joyce Vance (law) and Heather Cox Richardson (history) have been voices of calm, purposeful sanity for me. Good luck to you, and may the New Year bring beautiful things.

It's such a shame that McCarthy wasn''t willing to entertain reaching cross the aisle for those votes instead of selling his soul and the soul of our country. What a refreshing thing that might have been.

If he reached across the aisle, then the rest of his party would have abandoned him. It is the Obstruction Party.

Representative Jackson, Thank you for your unique, candid, and informative updates. I’m from Massachusetts, so not one of your local constituents. But I am a concerned American citizen, and I greatly appreciate what you are doing here and the opportunity to learn from it.

Congratulations on being a newly elected member of Congress! Now more than ever we need leaders with integrity, who truly care about the good of our country, and will put that above their own political ambitions. I look forward to learning more from your posts, and I wish you all the best going forward. May you find all the strength , stamina, wisdom and courage you will need to help fortify and support our Democracy and get something positive done in the months ahead.

Congratulations, Rep. Jackson. I admired you as a North Carolina senator in the Legislature, and I'm looking forward to your participation as a member of the US House of Representatives.

Glad you made it to Congress, Mr. Jackson. Wish it had been in that Senate seat instead, but who knows what the future brings. Meanwhile, thanks for these candid and informative missives. One thing that would be great to know is the most effective way for constituents to communicate with their representatives. Email? Phone? Snail-mail? What will actually get noticed?

That's a great question. In the state Senate, my answer was always a one-on-one visit, but I imagine those will be harder to come by in Congress. As soon as I'm there for a couple months I'll be able to give you a better answer.

I too will await your response. I am so pleased to know that you seem to remember that we are a government “of the people“ and that you really want to listen to us. Good on ya.

The majority voice of the people has been negated by the two concessions. I for one, resent this deeply.

It is a shame that your family did not get to see you sworn into office. Sounds like a grueling, somewhat boring 4 days. Looks like the far right will be running things for the next couple of years. It is a shame that McCarthy would not reach across the aisle to ensure some sanity in the house. It appears that he will be a puppet for the far right and will have very little influence or control.

Thanks for the update. I hope you will be able to keep doing this.

I'm not sure "running things" adequately describes what the #GangOf20 will be doing. Mostly trying to get Trump reelected in order to get themselves pardons?
