I get these notes in my email, and it's the only political email I haven't unsubscribed from because A) you aren't begging for more money and B) your explanations are easy to understand and helpful without being overwhelming. I'd love to see more of your colleagues produce snippets like this.

Whew, clarity from an elected official. What a breath of fresh spring air. Aaah.

I really look forward to your explanation of things. Impressive.

Thanks for these pithy and informative reports. I wish our other NC reps would follow your lead and write us with news from their committees.

You should see what I get from my representative. It's all Democrat bashing with little worthwhile information.

Thank you Jeff for these updates. As for myself and many Americans, North Carolinians and parents like yourself the urgency of a social media app versus the lack of urgency, desire, willingness and just overall speaking points towards gun reform is incredibly upsetting. The news cycle is what it is but this matter is top of mind for every parent kissing their child goodbye in the morning for a day of school. Please work diligently to bring parties together in a direction of change.

Thank you for sharing. I encourage you to consider that social media, mental health and other similar factors happen to people all over the world. Consider what the common denominator is in our country? Consider the weapon of choice repeatedly for mass shootings? Consider how you can get one faster than you can see your primary physician for a sinus infection? Just sit and think about it for a while. Think about the fact that you're saying social media is responsible for the mass shootings in our country and our country alone.

Thank you for sharing. It rather bothers me that "mental health" issues are being touted as the reason for mass shootings in schools and elsewhere. When will we realize that said mass shootings are CREATING massive mental health issues throughout the fabric of our society

Expand full comment

I couldn't agree more. Mental health is a very big concern for many of us and we need more funds, help and access to support but to be considered as the main reason is incorrect. I think it's pretty obvious there are mental health issues with anyone looking to do harm onto others, no one denies that in any way. The difference is here they can go get high powered AR's in under an hour and take people's lives. They can, they do and they will continue to do this unless we create change.

The intention of posting the link from Prof. Haidt was only to further inquiry and bolster the argument that yes, social media is causing harm, not to argue against gun control. I have deleted my comments so as not to further misinterpretation.

Ah ok that makes sense and apologies for the misinterpretation on my end.

I would say your point argues mine. Perhaps the accessibility to guns is the problem.

Jeff, I don't live in your district, but I have always admired the way you say it like it is without taking jabs at the other side. Thank you for this update on TikTok, which I believe you nailed: all social media apps, and perhaps ALL apps, put us all at risk in that we have no idea who is doing what with our information. I believe TikTok is an easy target because it's a China-based company, but do any of us really think that our personal information is more secure with a U.S.-based company? I hope you will lead the charge to address this. Thank you, Jeff, and keep up the great work!

Man this guy is amazingly real! How about we enact a law requiring every single member of Congress to communicate with their constituents (aka bosses!) exactly the way Jeff does!

Expand full comment

We don’t need to enact a law so much as to pay attention to who we’re voting for.

Some folks are single issue voters or vote the straight party ticket without looking at or even caring about who will hold the office.

They won't because the system is set up to destroy anyone who tries.

I'll just settle for a member of Congress whose publicity photos of his family don't feature both adults and children brandishing armament sufficient to take down hundreds of unarmed civilians in the time it takes to say Jack Robinson.

Good to hear there's possible movement on a US privacy bill. That's the real issue. Tiktoc is doing the same stuff facebook, google and others do. The US gov't can demand they hand over information just like the Chinese government can. How different is that?

Good morning. Cory Doctorow had a good piece today regarding the TikTok hearing, and agrees that the complaints mentioned refer to common practice across SM apps and the “duopoly” ecosystem. https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/30/tik-tok-tow/

Thank you for your thoughtful, clear and informative communication. I am happy and proud to be represented by you. I also appreciate your insights into both topics. It's great to see you on TV, thanks for doing it so well!

Thank you for your simple explanations of some of the issues. However, I think the real issue should be getting a handle on mass shootings. Somehow your colleagues need to put aside their political ambitions and jockeying, and try to do something bipartisan to immediately stop the use of assault style weapons. No one in this country should be able to purchase one of these. Mental health may be part of the issue but a ban of these would be an immediate first step. The Nashville shooting hit home as one of my friends’s grandaughters was a 4th grade teacher there and hid her students in a closet. How traumatizing and horrifying those 15 minutes or so were. No one should have to go through that. These could have been anyone’s children, grandchildren, wives, husband, father etc. We are a better country than this and I hope that the people in Congress remember that they were elected to represent the people and to do their best for ALL members in their state or district. You all are accountable to the people of this country. Please do better.

These are extremely valuable - emails from a member of Congress that I watch for so I can be sure to read them, not set them as spam. You are eyes-on in the room, explain the subjects well, and most of all you spare us the political bashing and talk to us about the issues instead. If only your colleagues would follow suit. From the rest of us out here in America: keep it up.
