I know this takes time and that the path to this is often convoluted and filled with compromises and what not, but Man, I am so hoping to see you someday as a presidential candidate.

Yes! 2028! Let’s make sure we vote Biden back in or we may never vote again so let’s do what we must to get to candidates like Jeff!

Yeah it’s really awful when people commit crimes and then our judicial system allows due process and gets to trial and a jury finds the defendant guilty of said crimes. And then the defendant can appeal the decision utilizing the best lawyers money can buy. Definitely Marxist 🙄

Don’t waste your time, Sur. Steve is not interested in facts. I followed the case closely and it was completely legit.

It’s tempting to ask “why spend $$$ to go to space to explore another possible living environment, while we are destroying the planet we live on” but it is nice to hear normal news too!

It’s nice to hear that not everything is a shtshow and people in America are still doing great, inspiring things, despite such a conflicted time.

So I appreciate that somewhere in this country, there are functional groups doing important work and still showing that we can do things that made us world leaders in the past!

Also, remember that 1% of our population can work to try to undo the evil deeds of a vast majority and then some to move us up on the civilization climb. That is what the great universities and scientific research outfits are for.

Expand full comment

Also remember that the NC general assembly just passed a bill that removes money from the public education system and gives it to people who are able to afford to send their children to private schools ~$3,300.

Every dollar taken out of the public schools system is your money. The money you earn at work is being given to people who don’t need it.

These are many of the same people who are against any kind of social safety net. Most welfare/medicaid recipients are children. No one gets into a “great university and scientific research outfit” unless they graduate high school. No civilization can reach its peak by economically unbalancing its resources.

Please, don’t forget that we must educate our children if we want to continue to go forward technologically.

It’s hard to study when you’re hungry. A truly hungry child is a crime.

To the university, and beyond 🚀

And much of these "tuitions" go to the wealthy and the religious schools.

Yes, the majority, if not all, of the school vouchers (your taxes) go to schools that I would describe as grooming schools. 😱 There, I said it!

They wouldn’t need to be private schools if they were teaching standard, core curricula.

I ahve no problem with what you say. I am all for it. We have to lift everybody from the bottom up in order for the society to flourish overall. Still education should be supported from the ground up to the highest level.

We agree!

To educate the college undergraduates, we must educate K-12. To educate the graduates and PhDs we must educate K-12.

You are educated, I can see, but you might not have ever had to decide between High School or supporting your family.

That’s great!

I saw too many adults trying to get their HSE (GED) and many of them were not able to begin their HSE education because they couldn’t pass the grammar school tests. The education situation is pretty ugly in some parts of America. Let’s invest in the systems that are accessible to everyone. Let’s improve our public schools.

Education is the only equalizer!

I am sorry for those who were left behind. I can assure you, no one cared about their learning. I'm including parents in this group.

Back in the dark ages my public college tuition was $100/year, 10 cents travel to and from home. But my friends all went away to private colleges. All my education was public. The equalizers were my parents and having access to great elementary teachers, and public libraries. This was NOT in NC.

Jim Hunt was the last hope for public education in NC. No one in NC wants to become a teacher these days. It's a very complex problem starting with our legislature.

I hope you mean public education.

That was my first thought too. I love the idea of gaining knowledge and exploration. At the same time, if we don’t learn and explore ways to save the planet that we currently enjoy, I’m not sure finding another place to destroy is a good idea

Well, if we destroy our own planet, we need a substitute, right? That's why we are exploring outer space. Ha, ha!

And thanks for the info on the visit to Europa. Fascinating.

Wonderful post.

Maybe when a media outlet asks you to do a segment meant to foment division plus outrage to equal clickable content and better ratings, you could -- if it's a live segment -- call them out for it.

You could reiterate the issue to show that we ALL care about it and we ALL care about solutions, and it's time we consult like adults instead of belittle like partisans.

The American people are craving for people of character to rise above the din.

Thank you for serving.

Thanks Jeff - Good news is always welcome.

Tiff asks why we are spending money on space exploration? My question is why are we paying Senators and Representatives $174,00 annually + perks to NOT do their job? The latest is this gang of 8 Senators that will only consider certain legislation?

There are those in the house that don't seem to be interested in doing anything positive. This is not the "do nothing" house; this is the "do less than nothing" house.

Vote Budd out

Unfortunately, Budd has 4 years left before his term ends. He is but another unqualified person to hold office.

This is why we have elections. We need to vote EVERY TWO YEARS, and any other state or local elections.

We can push any House Representative or Senator out in two years, easily. Sooner if we demand ethics reform and enforcement!

Every 2 years every member of the House is up for election. Every 2 years 1/3 of the Senate(33 senators)is up for election. Midterms matter.

Expand full comment

Of course elections matter. Particularly this year because there are more Democratic Senators up for election or reelection than there are Republicans. We must all vote to keep the majority in the Senate. Just think and worry about a Republican controlled Senate.

We need people who are actually willing to govern.

Much of the do nothing, was actually delay, distract, and disingenuous on behalf of the Rs. They are being handled by a non-elected felon, or several felons. Go figure 🤡

Yes, let’s vote to ensure that Ds not only keep our majority, but increase it!

OMG, Grassley and McConnell; the Thurmans of the 21st century!

We need younger people who understand technology, or at the very least their own phones.

There’s some easy targets in the House too, let’s not let them slip through our fingers.

Bc of obstruction this congress has accomplished the least legislation, while the rest of the country was watching the train wreck.

Expand full comment

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it until everyone gets it; MIDTERMS MATTER!

If you already know; say it again, spread the word!

Every two years the ENTIRE House of Representatives is elected!

Every two years 1/3 (~33) Senators are elected!

The presidential election gets the most attention, and then we fail to vote in the midterms, so we lose our edge in congress. Please, vote in every election, local, state, and federal!

You’ll be amazed at the impact your state officials have on big issues.

Look at how quickly the “state trigger laws” went into effect after the Supreme Court’s decision on abortion and contraception. That’s how important state elections are.

Yes, the Europa mission is interesting but given the frustrations of your job (Congress) I bet it felt great to get one thing DONE; the swing for Marisa!!!

Congress needs two hundred more reps like you. Thanks for the Europa story.

I love your email updates on everything. I am a former Republican now Independent voter. I am also a former resident of NC now living in CO. I contribute to your campaign when I can because we need more politicians like you. I too hope to be able to vote for you for president some day. Thank you for everything you are doing for our country!

As a certified, documented, and all-in space nut, the Europa mission and study far outweighs the potential of the Mars missions (cool as those will be). I'm on my way to Boca Chica (aka Starbase), TX to watch the next Starship test flight on Thursday. The timing of this post I'll take as a good omen! Thanks, Jeff!

Thank you for saying "no" to the one offer, and for sharing this wonderful news. I am a conservative Republican (not the DJT kind - I don't really think of him as either . . .) but I'm with Alejandro - you're exactly the kind of guy I'd love to see in the White House. I've really appreciated these emails and your insights.
